Well we made it!! We left Castlegar Thursday afternoon and arrived here 33 hours later. We spent a nice evening with George and Heather Pierce on Thursday and then left Vancouver for Hong Kong at 3:00am on Friday. The Pierce's have been very kind to us storing some of our luggage for the summer and running us around a lot.
The departure time seemed to be a crazy time to leave but I think the timing must be good for jet lag as neither of us seem to be too wiped out. I think the sleeping aids we took also helped things out.
We were picked up at the airport by the superintendent or director of the school. He took us on a quick tour of the area around the school so we could get our bearings in looking for accommodation. We then went out with him for our first meal. One of the highlights mentioned in all the info about Malaysia is the cuisine. This first meal didn't disappoint.
We spent yesterday looking for accommodation. We a couple of realtors lined up to show us around over the next few days. There is no multiple listing service here apparently and so each realtor and office has there own listings so it is a good idea to use the services of a few of them.
Late yesterday afternoon and evening we went to Bangsar, a shopping district to look around. There are thousands of tiny shops in the district, as well as a big mall. We just had a quick glance but it didn't look like prices in the mall were much different then at home.
When dusk came we wandered over to the night market area. There were hundreds of stalls set up selling all sorts of items, especially fresh produce and hawker food. The sights and smells were overwhelming. The stalls get their electricity from little generators so the vendors are trying to yell over the sound of all these engines. Then there are the smells of the exhaust and food and every thing else mixed in with it. It was something else. I've included a few photos of the experience.
